Your Role Model's Dead
Through the Eyes of Katelyn

Decent. Not the greatest album I've heard, but it's good. Definitely not worth twelve bucks, though. Through the Eyes of Katelyn is Jesse Smith's indie, side-project release, in which he plays everything himself: drums, guitars, bass, and vocals. The music he creates is akin to a softer version of the Deftones, maybe even Nirvana. There isn't anything that really stands out on the disc, but it's not horrible either. Actually, for the caliber of drumming that Jesse usually does with ZAO, this album is disappointing. Very dull and repetitive beats compared to what he usually plays. And with a few mishaps in timing occurring every few songs, he didn't do a lot to impress me.

The mix on the album isn't great either. Vocals are often drowned out by the guitars and seem to constantly be run through the broken phone effect. The mix on the drums is horrible, with the snare sounding distant, almost as though it was coming through cotton. It's just not good.

There are some good points, however. Some of the songs come off extremely well as grungy indie music, free from big budget glut. There are a few moments in some of the songs that'll put a smile on your face, but not nearly enough.

I can't say I would recommend this album to someone. It's overpriced at twelve dollars; it's incredible short; and it isn't groundbreaking or catchy. Also, it's hard to come by (only available through mail order, and that takes forever to get to you). Disappointing describes it best.
