P.O.D. is back with ten new tracks! Well, almost. With the re-release of Snuff the Punk, P.O.D.'s first album, Rescue Records hopes to capitalize on the group's ever-growing popularity by re-mastering the songs and re-doing the artwork. If you have known P.O.D. for a long time, most likely you will relish this CD just because you forgot to buy it the first time around.
But for those who have just recently become a fan, you may be disappointed when you listen to it. In comparison to the streamlined musicianship of Southtown, P.O.D.'s early music is definitely lacking. I'm not telling anyone not to buy this CD--I'm just giving fair warning to everyone who may not remember the difference between the band now and the band back in 1993-94.
The album starts out with a slow roller called, "He's Coming Back," that is musically sparse at first, but rolls into some half-way finished funk-like grooves. Moving towards the middle of the disc I found, "Draw the Line," this track was good enough to be on its way onto last year's "The Warriors EP" release from Tooth & Nail. Pretty much however, the sound stays with a very straight-ahead metal approach, with traces of Industrial guitars, and brief trips into more rapcore based P.O.D we know now.
In the scheme of things, this CD is not very exciting. To me, the reasons to buy this disc are few, you either really dig the band, like good artwork, or you want to see what the band was like back in the early days. For the Nostalgia factor I give 4 stars, for artwork I give 5, but for music I give
only 2.5 stars. I guess that gives this CD exactly 3.833r stars. Not too bad for a CD that I didn't really like.
