Before Millennium 8 Records sent us this album, I had never heard of this band, ever. Even my metal-head friend I've known since the 8th grade has never heard of them, and he owns every Stryper album in existence.
Which brings me to the first point about this band. These guys are definitely NOT a "hair band." When I first learned about Philadelphia, I was told they were a pre-Stryper, Christian metal band. Of course, the first thing that popped in my mind was a group of spandex-wearing, over-hairsprayed guys who look way too feminine. In actuality, they remind me of Judas Priest, and they sound a lot like them, too.
Musically, this is some of the tightest playing I've ever heard. Rhythm, timing, and tempo are all perfect. Even the vocals (which are, for the most part, in that 80's, much-higher-than-necessary decibel level) sound fairly decent. There are a few stereotypical guitar solos, but nothing that gets out of hand. The entire CD is very consistent, with nothing that sounds out of place.
As to the lyrics, I like the message in every song. You can definitely tell where their hearts are. However, you do have to remember this was originally recorded in 1985, so there is a slight air of corniness when it comes to lyrics. But it's not that bad. It definitely doesn't overshadow the group's musical talent, which totally shines through on every track.
There is even a new track they recorded in June of 1999 ("Kids In America"). I was completely caught off guard when I got to this one. It's hard to describe Philadelphia's sound on this song. It still has a very metal sound to it, but a lot grungier. Everything sounds extremely tight, nothing out of place or overdone. If I didn't know any better, I never would have guessed that these guys hadn't played together in years. And the lead singer has definitely improved with age. I was once again impressed with the consistency.
If you are any kind of old-school metal fan, I highly recommend this album. It's one of those discs that will definitely catch you off-guard (and if the music doesn't, the artwork will). If you're not a classic metal listener, then go to
www.philadelphiarev37.com, and check out some samples. Maybe it's not your thing, and that's OK. But after listening to these guys, you may change your mind about 80's metal altogether.
