Phil Dickey's release A Very Special Grace proclaims the greatness of God's love from beginning to end. The songs range from his versions of traditional hymns to original songs written from the experiences of a follower of Christ.

Phil's describes his style as being influenced by the crooners of the 40's, and you can definitely hear it in his strong vocal delivery. He has a very rich and powerful voice. Phil is backed up by the vocals of Allen and Sheree Mann on several songs, as well, and the three create some beautiful harmonies.

My main criticism of the album is that musically, it would have been much better with more diverse background instrumentation. The CD is largely restricted to vocals with keyboards and drums. Though there are some pretty neat uses of the keyboards (to sound like clarinets and other instruments), overall, I think an acoustic guitar would be a good addition in several of the songs.

As far as the lyrics go, I think my favorite song is "I Came To Love You Early." This song gives the testimony of someone whose "heart was touched by Jesus when he young."

While this album may not be typical fare for many of our readers (as the music is more geared to older folks), it is an encouraging album in its proclamation of God's love. I recommend it.

Phil does not sell his albums, but he offers them as gifts. (Donations are appreciated, though. If you are able to, give as God leads. But if you can't afford to do so, he will still send you an album.) More than your money though, his ministry would appreciate your prayers. (Phil's ministry is a wonderful testimony of God's provision as he and his wife travel the country in an RV performing at churches in a ministry of encouragement to the saints.)
