Jesus’ advice for good investments– Part 1

The Primary Text: Matthew 6:19-24

I. Word Definitions

A.      Treasure: (PUT LINK TO STRONG # HERE) pronounced as “thesaurus,” which is where we get the English word thesaurus):

1.       Where something valuable is kept, a storehouse, a storeroom

2.       That which is stored up, treasure[1]

B.      Rust:  (PUT LINK TO STRONG # HERE pronounced as “brosis”) here means not corrosion of metal but rather something being consumed or eaten away by rats, mildew, mold, etc.

II. What are treasures?

            A. In the First Century?

1.       Gold & Silver – lost by theft

2.       Clothing – lost by moths, mold, mildew, etc.

B.      In the Twenty-first Century?

1.       What do we call treasures today?

2.       How can we lose those things today?

A.      Natural disasters

B.      Stock market crashes

C.      Being taken advantage of by others

D.      Sometimes even our own foolish spending

C.      What does Jesus teach us to do?

1.       Stop storing up treasures on earth. (The tense in the Greek implies a turn-around or repentance from our past way of doing things.)

2.       Store treasures in Heaven. --- How do we do this? See v. 22-23

3.       Does this text teach that we shouldn’t be prudent with our finances here on earth? – See I Timothy 5:8, Proverbs 6:6-8, and I Timothy 4:4-5, 6:17 -- The Issue is the heart. Do we master our finances and use them for the Lord’s work as a faithful steward, or do we let our finances master us?

III. Application

A.      Invest your efforts in eternity. It might be prudent to invest in your financial well being here on earth, but that is really only short-term investing. The best place to invest is in Heaven’s bank.

B.      Don’t fall into idol worship. America’s favorite idol is Mammon but we need to do what I John 5:21 says, “Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”
