The Model Prayer (The Lord’s
Prayer)
A. Different Versions:
1. Luke 11:1-4
Luke’s version of the prayer is given when one of his disciples asks for instruction on how to pray. This prayer is shorter.
2. Matthew 6:9-13
Matthew’s version of the prayer is given as part of the Sermon on the Mount. This prayer is longer and is the one we are more familiar with.
B. The components of this prayer:
1. The Address to God –“Our Father who is in Heaven”
2. The petitions (requests to God)
i. For God’s name to be hallowed
ii. For the Kingdom to come /God’s will be done
iii. For daily bread to be provided
iv. For forgiveness of sins as we forgive others
v. For deliverance from temptation
3. Closing statement of praise (sometimes called “the Doxology” from the Greek word doxologia – “giving glory”)

Parables Concerning Prayer
A. Parables that teach to be persistent in
prayer
i. The parables of the annoying neighbor and the generous father (Luke 11:5-13)
ii. The parable of the widow and the unrighteous Judge (Luke 18:1-8)
B. Parables that teach the importance of
humility in coming to God
i. The prayers of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14)
C. Parables on faith in prayer
i. The prayer that moved a mountain (Mark 11:20-26)

on Prayer
A. Don’t be a hypocrite. Pray with simplicity and genuineness. (Matt. 6:5-8, Matt. 23:14, Mark 12:38-40)
B. Pray in agreement with others (Matt. 18:18-20)
C. Pray in Jesus’ name (John 14:13, John 16:23-24)
